Milton Everett Olin Jr., a former executive at Napster, was killed while riding his bicycle when he was struck by a police cruiser. After being struck, Olin, 65, hit the vehicle’s windshield, shattering it before rolling off. He was riding in the bike lane at the time of the accident. Olin was pronounced dead at the scene. He is survived by his wife and two adult sons.
Distracted drivers can make riding a bicycle on the road very dangerous, even when a bike lane is used. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 677 cyclists were killed in accidents with motor vehicles on U.S. roadways last year. Males make up 69 percent of those deaths.
When a driver’s negligence results in a cyclist’s injuries, the cyclist may have a claim for monetary damages against the driver. Drivers often make right-hand turns in front of cyclists and roll through stop signs, striking the rider. Drunk drivers, who may weave in and out of the bike lane, are also particularly dangerous for cyclists.
