Wishing you could indulge in a Broadway musical this weekend, but can’t get away from the Los Angeles area? Check out the iO West Theater’s long-running presentation of “Opening Night: Improvised Musical.”
The night’s performance combines “the improvisational styles of the iO West with the Broadway styling of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Gilbert & Sullivan, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bob Fosse and Edith Head.”
True to improv theater’s roots, the cast asks the audience to provide a title and a location for the show to begin. From there, five improvisers and one musical accompanist present a two-act mini-musical that is both the opening night and closing night of the story. The show has consistently received high reviews from critics in LA Weekly and Los Angeles Magazine, and is sure to offer an evening of theater limited only by the actors’ imaginations.
This intriguing blend of theater, music, and creative improvisation runs at iO West at 9:00 p.m. on Friday evenings through December.
The theater is located at 6366 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 90028, two blocks from the MTA subway. Tickets cost $10 per person and can be purchased by phone at 323-962-7560, or via TicketMaster. Theatergoers should be aware this is a 21-and-older show.
From all of us at Drake Law Firm, we hope you enjoy this night of improve in Los Angeles.
