A 19-year-old pedestrian was killed Tuesday when she was struck by a motorist who left the scene, Fresno police said.
The woman was walking with another person as they crossed Ashlan near Valentine Avenue about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. Henry Garcia said.
For unclear reasons, a dark-colored car did not stop and struck one of the women, who was declared dead when emergency responders arrived, Garcia said.
The women were not in a crosswalk and they were almost to the center median when one was fatally hit, police said.
Officers said they believe the women were friends, but they were not able to immediately interview the survivor, who was distraught. Police said the investigation was preliminary, but it did not appear the motorist attempted to stop or render aid to the woman, he said.
Officers were looking for surveillance video and witnesses in the hit-and-run, Garcia said.
Anyone with information was asked by police to call 559-621-7000. Anyone calling with information can remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
