Two men died and one woman was injured on Tuesday night when a driver in a Tesla and a driver in a Subaru SUV collided on Highway 1 in San Mateo County, officials said.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred at about 6:40 p.m. near Bean Hollow State Beach, 37 miles south of San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol said. The Subaru driver was traveling north while the Tesla driver was headed south, CHP said.
One of the drivers veered into the other lane and “crashed head-on” into the other car, CHP said. The agency didn’t yet know which vehicle crossed the yellow line, causing the collision. KTVU reported that the cars landed in a lagoon on the side of the highway, and one vehicle “fully submerged.”
The two men died at the scene, and a woman in her 60s was airlifted by helicopter to Stanford Medical Center with serious injuries, CHP said.
The agency did not specify which vehicles the individuals were in, but KTVU said the woman’s husband died in the collision.
